Russia, the Caucasus nation’s most significant ally, is worried about joint military training between Armenia and the United States that began on Monday. From September 12–20, about 175 Armenian and 85 American personnel will take part in Eagle Partner” military training. It is “strange,” Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said on Sunday, given that Armenia has been refusing to participate in drills with the other five members of the Collective Security Treaty Organization for the past two years while it is hosting U.S. personnel.

Similarly, Russia contacted Armenia’s ambassador by phone to voice its displeasure over what it termed “unfriendly acts” on the side of Armenia. Because of the strategic impasse it creates, a “very detailed investigation” is required because Armenia has decided to collaborate with the United States. Armenians have voiced their dissatisfaction with Russia for failing to provide military and diplomatic support as tensions escalate with Azerbaijan. Nagorno-Karabakh is the flashpoint that has ignited two wars between Azerbaijan and Armenia. To no avail, the United States and the European Union have taken the lead in mediating the peace talks. Therefore, Armenia is seeking out fresh, potent relationships.
