North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu in Vladivostok, where he examined cutting-edge weapons such as a hypersonic missile system. Kim’s first official tour outside the country since the coronavirus outbreak has fueled Western suspicions that Moscow and Pyongyang may violate sanctions and conclude an arms agreement. Moscow is said to be interested in purchasing North Korean weaponry to continue fighting in Ukraine, while Pyongyang is seeking Russia’s assistance in developing its globally condemned missile program. According to the Kremlin, no deal has been or will be signed. Kim saw strategic Tu-160, Tu-95MS, and Tu-22M3 bombers, fighter jets, and a hypersonic Kinzhal missile system.
Kim was informed by Shoigu and Lt. Gen. Sergei Kobylash, who heads up Russia’s long-range bomber force, that the Tu-160 now carries cruise missiles with a range of about 6,500 kilometers (nearly 4,040 miles). Shoigu indicated the bombers’ armament bays and noted that each one could carry 12 missiles.
