Fumio Kishida, the prime minister of Japan, has expressed his openness to meeting with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un to discuss the escalating tensions caused by Pyongyang’s nuclear programs. During his address to the United Nations General Assembly, Kishida restated Japan’s public commitment to resolving all concerns with North Korea, including the abduction of Japanese citizens in the past. He is hoping for high-level talks with Kim Jong Un, the leader of North Korea, with no preconditions. Japan’s diplomacy played a role in normalizing relations with North Korea after its previous visit to Pyongyang in 2002. Pyongyang’s missile tests in recent months have significantly raised tensions. The US has extended an offer of negotiations, but North Korea has shown little interest.
