Avdiivka, a symbol of Ukrainian resistance since 2014, has fallen to the Russian army’s advance in Ukraine. Russian President Vladimir Putin has stated that his country’s armed forces have strengthened their position in numerous regions. An excerpt from an interview he gave to Russian television was shared online on Sunday, and it revealed that “our troops are improving their position in virtually all of this territory,” which is rather large.

Putin, in lauding the army’s “active defense strategy,” specifically mentioned the regions of Kupiansk, Zaporizhzhia, and Avdiivka.

On Saturday, Kyiv said combat had been “extremely intense” around Avdiivka, adding that Russian soldiers had “not ceased storming” the city for days. Since 2014, when it became a focal point of Ukrainian resistance, the city has been under constant attack, even before the offensive’s official launch in February 2022. Russian soldiers have taken over the areas to the east, north, and south of Avdiivka in an effort to further isolate Donetsk from Ukrainian control. The Russians are trying to “encircle the city with more and more troops,” creating a “very stressful” situation on the ground. After a slower-than-anticipated four months, the Ukrainians are finally stepping up their attack on Avdiivka.
