Netanyahu had written on his official account on the โ€œXโ€ website that all intelligence agencies estimated that the Hamas movement had been โ€œdeterredโ€ following previous wars and was moving toward a settlement.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has come under fire for allegedly blaming the country’s security forces for their inability to foresee the October 7 “Al-Aqsa Flood” operation conducted by the Hamas movement. There was a later retraction and Netanyahu denied knowing that Hamas planned to attack Israel in a statement. He placed the blame on the security services, specifically on Aharon Haliva, chief of military intelligence for the Israeli army, and Ronen Bar, head of the Shin Bet. Both inside and outside of government, people were very critical of this comment. Yair Lapid, leader of the opposition, and Merav Michaeli, leader of the Labor Party, have both spoken out against Netanyahu for his failure to support the military’s top brass. Netanyahu addressed a news conference shortly after the start of hostilities with Hamas, denying any culpability for the conflict’s initial failure.
