In a letter to US President Joe Biden dated November 8, Van Hollen and twenty-five other Democratic senators voiced their reservations about Israeli military policy, particularly its effects on civilians, while also endorsing Israel’s military demands.

The terrorist organization Hamas, which controls Gaza, killed almost 1,200 Israelis on October 7, igniting the conflict. The majority of the over 15,000 Palestinian casualties in Israel’s military offensives against Hamas in Gaza have been children and women. Following a week-long truce brokered by Qatar, Egypt, and the US, during which humanitarian aid could reach Gaza and 110 out of 240 Israeli and international hostages taken on October 7 were exchanged for 240 Palestinian prisoners freed from Israeli prisons, Israeli military operations in Gaza resumed on Friday.

Senators Van Hollen and Sullivan met with US National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan on Wednesday to discuss US policy regarding the Israel-Hamas conflict.
