The current military junta in Gabon has reportedly granted former president Ali Bongo Ondimba house arrest with full freedom of movement. Since Bongo had a stroke five years ago, his health has been a major concern. The military has announced that he can get medical treatment in another country. This announcement occurred just two days after coup leader General Brice Oligui Nguema took office in Gabon. On suspicion of bribery, embezzlement, and treason, the military has detained Bongo’s family and closest advisors.

Former Gabonese president Bongo Bongo’s assassination by the military set off a chain reaction across Africa, hurting countries with endemic crime and corruption and a growing generation of disenchanted young people. Niger had experienced a coup in July, which set the stage for the later July event. After ascending to power in 2009, Bongo faced accusations of dynastic rule and meddling in shady elections. Josep Borrell Fontelles, the European Union’s foreign policy chief, voiced his disapproval of Bongo’s activities.
