During the G20 meeting, the United States of America, Saudi Arabia, the European Union, and the United Arab Emirates will sign an agreement to study a railway and port project that will increase trade flows between Europe and India. In order to facilitate the movement of trade, energy, and data from India to Europe via the Middle East and Europe, the plan may include the construction of rail and sea transportation facilities. The project has a huge amount of promise, but its specific timing is unknown at this time. The project is still in its early phases, and members are now doing research to determine the most effective means of connecting India’s massive 1.4 billion population and rapidly expanding economy with markets in western countries. Michael Kugelman, director of The Wilson Center’s South Asia Institute, stated that the proposal might be a substantial and counter-strategic move to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has pushed Chinese influence, investments, and commerce across Europe, Africa, Asia, and Latin America. Kugelman stated that the initiative could be a significant response to the BRI. At a conference that has shown deep-seated tensions between key G20 members over Russia’s war in Ukraine and how to pay for climate change, the decision to consider the project could be among the most tangible steps that have taken place. The climate monitor for the European Union has predicted that this year will most likely set a new record for the warmest year in human history. Around 85 percent of the world’s greenhouse gas emissions come from the G20 nations.
