It’s official: Russian President Vladimir Putin will travel to North Korea to meet with his counterpart Kim Jong Un and hold historic talks. After their meeting, the two leaders announced that Russia will help North Korea with its space program, and Putin expressed interest in working together militarily. Russia and North Korea are both subject to international sanctions because of the turmoil in Ukraine and Pyongyang’s nuclear tests, respectively. Concern over illegal arms deals has been prompted by Kim’s visit, with the ruling party in South Korea calling the pact a “devil’s deal.” Following the Putin-Kim summit, Japan issued a strong warning against any attempts to circumvent UN restrictions on military transfers with North Korea. Kim affirmed his faith in Russia’s ability to defeat its foes and stressed the significance of keeping the Russia-DPRK alliance strong. Because of Russia’s ongoing involvement in the crisis in Ukraine, many Western countries are worried about the prospect of an arms pact between Russia and North Korea. Putin lauded the growing relationship between the two nations, saying that Moscow might assist Pyongyang in developing satellite technology. In contrast, State Department spokesman Matthew Miller expressed concern that such cooperation could be in violation of many resolutions passed by the UN Security Council.
