Russian air strikes and shelling have killed six persons in Ukraine and severely damaged infrastructure at the Black Sea port of Odesa as well as grain storage facilities. The strikes are part of a strategy to make it more difficult for Ukraine, a key grain producer, to export its products since Moscow pulled out of a pact in mid-July that authorized Black Sea shipments and helped address a global food crisis. The strikes have intensified as Kyiv continues its counteroffensive in the south and east, which has achieved gradual gains but could be strengthened by the delivery of US-built Abrams tanks, which President Volodymyr Zelenskiy confirmed on Monday. The latest air attack, according to the Ukrainian Defense Ministry, was a “pathetic attempt” to revenge for a raid on the headquarters of Russia’s Black Sea navy on Friday. Ukraine has relied heavily on Western armaments to defend itself against Russia before launching a counteroffensive in early June.
