The Pentagon has dispatched 2,000 Marines and sailors to the waters off the coast of Israel as part of a “show of force” in the region, amid continued conflict between Israel and Palestinian militants. The elite 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit commands the fast response force, which is sailing to Israel on the USS Bataan, an amphibious assault ship that was recently stationed in the Gulf of Oman. The naval deployments are said to be intended to convey a deterrent message to Iran and the Lebanese militant group Hezbollah. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin has ordered an additional 2,000 troops to prepare for a possible “medical and logistical support” operation in Israel. The 2,000 soldiers are spread across the globe, including the Middle East and Europe, but have been ordered to deploy within 24 hours if necessary. The move comes as some US lawmakers push for direct military action in the Middle East. President Biden has acknowledged that more military aid is on its way to Israel as the United States prepares for a broad offensive against Hamas. Israel’s plea for assistance on the first day of the battle foreshadows the amount of weaponry it expects to require as the conflict advances, and more is yet to come.
