According to NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg, there remains a continual risk of terrorist strikes in Europe, even when there is no imminent military threat. In an effort to improve border control and intelligence sharing, Stoltenberg is collaborating with allies in North Africa, the Middle East, Jordan, and Tunisia. He demanded that the ceasefire in the Gaza Strip be prolonged so that hostages could be freed and humanitarian supplies could be delivered. Stoltenberg emphasized that NATO is still involved in the region, despite the fact that it has never been directly involved in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. A new round of Middle Eastern tensions erupted when terrorists from the Gaza Strip, known as Hamas, launched an unexpected attack on Israeli territory.
