The United States has responded to a drone strike that killed three service members by launching attacks against Iraqi and Syrian militias backed by Iran. A possible escalation
of the conflict in the Middle East has been
highlighted by the strikes. The assaults have resulted in the deaths of 23 individuals in Syria and 16 in Iraq, with bystanders near the areas of attack also being among the casualties. Additional strikes by US and UK air aircraft on Saturday hit 36 locations controlled by the Houthi rebels in Yemen, including missile systems and weapons depots. In the aftermath of the strikes on Iraq and Syria, Dmitry Polyansky, Russia’s deputy UN envoy, demanded an immediate gathering of the UN Security Council.
Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani said that the strikes have put the security of Iraq and the wider region “on the brink of the abyss,” and the reaction has been criticized by both Iran and the targeted countries. According to European ambassador Josep Borrell, the Middle East is “a cauldron that could explode” and everyone involved in the area should try to keep tensions from rising. Even while one Iraqi group just announced it will stop attacking U.S. personnel, there areย many other militias that have not followed suit, thus reprisal attacks by Iraqi militias against the US are still possible ti get worse in the near future .
Since January 12, the US has been using missiles and drones to target the Houthi militias, who are backed by Iran, mostly near the important Red Sea port of Al Hodeida. The goal is to eliminate their capability to attack international ships approaching the Suez Canal.
