India’s TATA Institute has developed a $1 pill that could prevent cancer recurrence and reduce treatment side effects by 50%. The new drug, ‘R+Cu’, contains pro-oxidants like resveratrol and copper, which could generate cancer-fighting ‘oxygen radicals’. These radicals prevent dying cells from turning healthy ones cancerous and restrain the movement of cancer cells from one part of the body to another, known as’metastasis’. The drug could be effective in treating pancreatic, lung, and oral cancers. The drug is expected to cost 100 rupees ($1.2) and is awaiting approval from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI). The drug is expected to be released to the market in June-July. India has added 30 new cancer hospitals in the last nine years and is working on ten more.
