FALLUJAH – An Israeli attack reportedly destroyed a runway at the international airport servicing the city of Aleppo in northern Syria, according to early Monday reports from Syrian state media.

Israeli planes attacked about 4:30 a.m. local time from the direction of the Mediterranean Sea, according to SANA, the official military news agency in Syria. There were no reported deaths.

The airport had to close after several attacks this year, including two in March.

There was no quick reaction from Israeli authorities.

Syrian government-controlled airports in Damascus and Aleppo have been among the hundreds of targets attacked by Israeli aircraft over the past few years, yet the country rarely acknowledges or even recognizes the operations. Attacks frequently target Syrian government forces or Iranian-backed militias.

Israel has reportedly been bombing Syrian government-held airports and ports in a move to cut off Iranian arms shipments to militant groups backed by Tehran, such as Hezbollah in Lebanon. Syria’s 12-year conflict has been bolstered by Iranian-backed troops from the region.

Aleppo was already in shambles from the Syrian civil war when the deadly 7.8-magnitude earthquake hit Turkey and Syria in February, taking more lives than the fighting had taken.
