Kyiv — On Monday, Ukraine’s defense minister resigned shortly after President Volodymyr Zelensky revealed his intention to replace him. The decision was made in response to an ongoing corruption investigation, as Kyiv aims to demonstrate to its Western partners, who provide significant defense aid, that it has a strong stance against corruption.

As a result of the current counteroffensive and the need for new leadership, Ukraine’s Defense Minister Rustem Umerov has been replaced. The decision came as a result of Mr. Reznikov’s pleas to stand down, criticism from Ukrainian civil society groups and the media for contractual issues, and the necessity for new leadership.
