This coming weekend will see the start of a two-day summit in New Delhi, the Indian capital.During India’s tenure as G20 president, the country will have a tremendous window of opportunity.

Concerns about possible breakthroughs have been expressed during India’s G-20 chairmanship because of the country’s declared goals of uniting the global south and positioning itself as a bridge between the global south and the West. There is little chance for progress on the Ukrainian crisis during the summit on September 9-10 in New Delhi because neither Russian President Vladimir Putin nor Chinese President Xi Jinping will be in attendance. Since the International Criminal Court issued an arrest order for Putin and his supporters in March for war crimes in Ukraine, Jinping has also been kept in the dark about Putin’s travels outside of Russia.

The potential for a Russian invasion of Ukraine has altered the dialogue surrounding debt relief for developing nations and cryptocurrency. The G-20 conference will also discuss multilateral banking reforms and the expansion of the African Union. Since taking office in December 2022, New Delhi has been unable to reach agreements with other countries on joint statements about key areas of debate.
