On September 17, the United States Air Force lost contact with its pricey F-35B fifth-generation stealth fighter jet over South Carolina and immediately began searching for the plane. A pilot was forced to evacuate from the missing F-35B Lightning II plane, which has an estimated worth of $80 million. The hunt has narrowed in on two lakes north of North Charleston, after the last sighting was around Moultrie and Marion. The F-35 has gone missing, and Joint Base Charleston is looking for the public’s help in locating it. The F-35B’s inoperable transponder, which would normally aid in identifying the aircraft, has made the search more difficult. It has also inspired political commentary, with some Republicans speculating that they’ll need a “Find My F-35” app to track down the missing $80 million plane.
