According to US intelligence, Syrian President Bashar al-Assad has agreed to give the militant Lebanese group Hezbollah a Russian-made missile defense system. The delivery of the surface-to-air SA-22 missile system to Syria has been entrusted to the Russian mercenary outfit Wagner Group. The system was originally delivered by Russia for use by the Syrian government. The recent motion of the system, also known as a Pantsir, has been tracked by the United States. Some fear that Hezbollah is contemplating creating a new front in Israel’s conflict against Hamas, and the potential of a new air defense system for the group has only added to their worries. The United States has deployed aircraft carriers and troops to the region to dissuade any further escalation. The latest US assessment is based on intelligence obtained about discussions among Assad, Wagner, and Hezbollah about the delivery of the system. The conflict between Hamas and Israel has claimed over 50 lives in southern Lebanon.
