According to General Yoshihide Yoshida, Chief of the Joint Staff for Japan’s Self-Defense Forces, Japan must build its domestic armaments sector to maintain its own security. Yoshida underlined the importance of bolstering defensive capabilities and maintaining long-term deterrence, particularly measures utilizing US nuclear weapons. For more than a decade, Japan has engaged in a “deep debate” with the US about expanding the US nuclear umbrella over Japan, culminating in a June agreement for increased information sharing, joint training, and missile reaction. Yoshida stressed Japan’s position in the Indo-Pacific region and warned of North Korean and Chinese provocations. The strategic environment is pushing public support for higher military spending and improved counter-strike capabilities.
