Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General of the United Nations, has warned against a new nuclear arms race, threatening the world with “annihilation.” As nuclear-armed states grow and modernize their arsenals, the UN Secretary-General has urged for a renewed push to diminish and finally eliminate such weapons. For the first time in decades, the number of nuclear weapons could increase, and any use of a nuclear bomb would result in a humanitarian disaster. Russia and the United States have the largest arsenals, but China’s is rapidly expanding. North Korea accused the US of pushing the Korean Peninsula “closer to the brink of nuclear war.” North Korea’s UN envoy, Kim Song, has slammed South Korea’s activities under President Yoon Suk Yeol, alleging the Korean peninsula is on the verge of nuclear war. According to the Stockholm International Peace Research Institute, the world’s nuclear powers, particularly China, increased expenditure in their arsenals for the third year in a row in 2022. Guterres encouraged governments to pledge to never employ nuclear weapons “under any circumstances” and to revitalize and improve the Treaties on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons and the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons.
