Authorities in Freetown, the capital of Sierra Leone, have stated that a string of assaults on jails and military installations were an attempted coup that was unsuccessful. Thirteen military personnel and one citizen were apprehended as a result of the event, according to Chernor Bah, the minister of information. A democratically elected administration was to be criminally undermined and toppled. The assaults resulted in the deaths of at least 20 individuals and the escape of approximately 2,200 inmates from the jails that were targeted. According to President Julius Maada Bio, “most of the leaders” behind the attack have been apprehended, and the government will keep looking for the others. With the recent emergence of roadblocks and the continued closure of schools and banks, tensions in Freetown have unfortunately persisted. The economic consequences of the COVID-19 outbreak and Russia’s invasion of Ukraine have also been a burden on the country.
