Minister Annalena Baerbock stated that Germany would not oppose the sale of Eurofighter fighters to Saudi Arabia following her meeting with Israeli President Isaac Herzog and Israeli Foreign Minister Israel Katz on January 7. Saudi Arabia can now purchase fighter jets built by Eurofighter Typhoon, a ban that Germany has now reversed.
According to Baerbock, Saudi Arabia plays an important role in protecting Israeli securityย from potential regional conflicts by preventing missile assaults from Houthi and Yemen.
Germany’s shifting position on the supply of Eurofighters is evidence that Saudi Arabia plays a significant role in regional deterrence. If Germany doesn’t stand in the way, Saudi Arabia will undoubtedly acquire Eurofighters, further cementing its alliance with the West.
It is possible that Saudi Arabia would adopt a more conspicuous role in intercepting Houthi missile assaults on Israel after acquiring the Eurofighters, but it is more probable that Saudi Arabia will remain defensive and refrain from aggressively repelling any threats.
Setting the Scene: Berlin has to give its stamp of approval before any transaction can take place regarding the Eurofighter because the project is a collaboration between Germany, Spain, Italy, and the UK. Before the Yemen war ended, Germany opposed selling Eurofighters to Saudi Arabia and linked any such sale to a resolution of that conflict. Israel was the target of a Houthi missile that Saudi Arabia intercepted in October 2023. While the United States military has successfully intercepted multiple missiles launched by the Houthi, its involvement in this operation has been more covert.
