President Recep Tayyip Erdogan is set to sign Stockholm’s NATO accession treaty in the coming days, following 20 months of negotiations in which Ankara and its Western partners have exhibited significant schisms. As a reminder of the growing divide between Ankara and the other NATO members, the decision was described as “decisive” for Sweden’s future but received only polite congratulations in Western capitals. In May 2022, Turkey’s presidential majority voted 287 to 55 to ratify the protocol for Sweden’s membership in the Atlantic Alliance. Recep Tayyip Erdogan, Turkey’s president, will now sign the document. The 20-month standoff has exposed the basic schism inside NATO, with Turkey’s evident disagreement with its members standing out most.

Turkey’s National Assembly approved Sweden’s NATO application, leaving Hungary as the last non-approved member. This permission may increase pressure on Hungary to proceed. The United States is ready to sell F-16 fighter jets to Turkey, which could signal that NATO countries have lost interest in stopping Turkish attacks on Kurds. If the sale fails, Turkey’s diplomatic relationship with the US may deteriorate, potentially threatening cooperation.
