The US government has pointed out the alleged human rights violations by five Israeli army units before the recent conflict with Hamas. However, there are currently no intentions to impose sanctions or limit military aid to West Jerusalem. The allegations arise from incidents in the West Bank that occurred well before the Israel-Hamas conflict erupted in Gaza last October. Surprisingly, even though there is a law in place that bars the US from supporting groups that have flagrantly violated human rights without facing consequences, all accused Israeli units are still able to receive American aid. Quite a paradox, isn’t it? The Biden administration continues to uphold the so-called Leahy Law, as Israel has taken appropriate action against the majority of the units that were accused of wrongdoing. According to media reports, there have been allegations of serious human rights violations, including incidents of “extrajudicial killings” by Israeli border police, as well as cases of torture and rape. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu sarcastically remarked that it would be utterly ridiculous to penalize his country’s forces while they are engaged in combat against “terrorist monsters.”
