At a Russian cosmodrome, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong Un talked about the North Korean satellite program and whether or not Moscow could get missiles and ammunition from Pyongyang. Kim pledged his complete support to Moscow in its “holy war” against the hegemonic powers. Washington and its allies are keeping a tight eye on the summit between the leaders of the two countries because of concerns that they may agree to exchange weaponry and defense technologies.

Add to the western allies worries North Korea, according to the military of South Korea and the government of Japan, fired two short-range ballistic missiles into the sea off its east coast few hours before the summit.

Analysts say this launch, the first of its kind while Kim was away, shows that North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs are under tighter control and more delegated authority than previously thought.

The United States and South Korea are worried that Kim may supply Russia with weapons and ammunition, despite the fact that Moscow has already depleted its massive supplies during the over 18-month conflict in Ukraine. Russia and North Korea both say they have no such plans. Given North Korea’s recent failures to launch spy satellites, the decision to hold the meeting at Vostochny Cosmodrome, a symbol of Russia’s ambitions as a space power, stands out.

On Tuesday, Kim landed in Russia with top defense industry and military officials in tow, emphasizing the “strategic importance” of the ties between the two countries. According to experts, the composition of Kim’s group suggests a focus on defense industrial collaboration.
